When was the last time you reinvented yourself, becoming something more than the person that you already were?
As a woman of color, I am particular about my hair. My hairstyles range over a wide variety. This range can go from natural styles like wash and gos and twist out, to protective styles like sew-in’s and weave. It depends on both my lifestyle and my mood. I factor in things like upcoming meetings at work, if and where I’m going on a vacation, and how much time and money I have to spend on my hair at that time. Who am I kidding? On a more trivial note, I might change my hair up just to exude a certain look in my selfies. The point is, my hairstyles vary. And I love the flexibility in style choices that my hair provides.
Going to work in Corporate America has made me more aware of my diversity of hairstyles. When my hairstyle changes, my coworkers notice. Their responses are usually compliments on my ‘new look,’ sprinkled with a few questions like how did I achieve a certain style, did I cut my hair, or how did my hair grow overnight.
I don’t mind their curiosity because Black Girl Magic will catch your attention! In addition to that, I know that their questions come from genuine curiosity and that they mean well. No harm, no foul. It is easy for me to change my hair up and reinvent it, if you will, because it is a part of my routine.
It wasn’t until I was watching an older Pepsi commercial by the Queen Mother, aka she that is called Beyoncé that I noticed how often she reinvented herself and changed her appearance.

Yes, she is an entertainer and that is a part of her job but it was intriguing to see the different personas that she embodied over time. This really made me think about what I have done to reinvent myself as a person, outside of my hair… to be continued.
